Broadband Phone Service (VoIP) Technology

As the name implies, Voice over IP refers to calls that utilize Internet Protocol (IP) networks instead of the traditional PSTN (Publically Switched Telephone Network). This may mean that the call is routed over the Internet, or the call may transmitted over a privately managed data network which is using IP to transport the call from one location to the other. The voice stream is broken down into packets, compressed, and sent toward their final destination by various routes (as opposed to establishing a 'permanent' connection for the duration of the call), depending on the most efficient paths given network congestion, etc. At the other end, the packets are reassembled, decompressed, and converted back into a voice stream by various hardware and software elements, depending on the nature of the call and its final destination.  -PC to normal (PSTN) telephone

The call originates from a PC then connects to the Internet/IP Network.
Using different hardware/software the call is routed thru the IP Network.
At some point during this routing the call is decompressed and transfered to the PSTN where it completes to the telephone you are calling.

 -Broadband phone to normal (PSTN) telephone

The call originates from a broadband phone then connects to the Internet/IP Network.
Using different hardware/software the call is routed thru the IP Network.

 -PSTN to PSTN telephone call

The call originates from a normal telephone, where using a calling card or dial around access number you access the Internet/IP Network via your PSTN Network.
