Ericsson to supply Telefonica's metropolitan broadband network in Spain

Ericsson scored a nice contract in Spain. Whish I could get in on this, but my transmission skills are a little rusty. Sure would be nice to stay close to home for a while though.

Telefónica de España has selected Ericsson as supplier for its metro DWDM optical network. The new network will be a cornerstone of the next generation transport network of Telefónica in Spain.

Under the agreement Ericsson will deploy its Multihaul WDM solution to enhance the capacity of Telefónica's metropolitan transport network in Spain.

Enrique Carrascal, Network Director, Telefónica de España, says: "We have chosen Ericsson as the supplier of this technology due to its outstanding flexibility, optimal performance and operational synergies."

The new network will allow Telefónica to meet the increasing traffic demand generated by the consumer's response to its broadband services offering.

Jazztel Launches VoIP Service for Carriers with Nortel Solution

I like this one. I am probaly going to do some upgrade work for Jazztel in the coming weeks, so this might be a sign of more to come. It would sure be nice to be able to work near home for a change. I have been travelling too much on all these Nortel projects.

Jazztel Launches VoIP Service for Carriers with Nortel Solution

MARCH 28, 2006
MADRID, Spain - Jazztel has launched wholesale carrier international VoIP services using Nortel next-generation technology.

A leading telecommunications and data transmission carrier in Spain, Jazztel, has deployed Nortel's carrier-grade technology to more cost-effectively enhance its original network to provide the next-generation capacity and performance needed to create new revenue-generating wholesale international services for its service provider customers. In addition to technology, Nortel is providing Jazztel with deployment and maintenance services from the Nortel Global Services portfolio.

"Jazztel's network upgrade is vital to helping us introduce new services and create new revenue streams, "said Rafael Conejos, chairman, Jazztel. "In the late 1990s, as one of several fixed-line operators emerging in Spain, we set a flexible foundation for the future by investing in a network backbone and added extensive last-mile connectivity from Nortel. This initial investment meant that when we wanted to upgrade our network, Nortel carrier-class switching technology was easily deployed to provide additional capacity for our new wholesale services."

Boy would I love to get in on the maintenance contract. It would be nice to get back on the VoIP softswitch equipment. I have been stuck on the legacy TDM telephone switches for over a year. Hope spring eternal though.

Ericsson brings HSDPA and IMS to Optimus in Portugal

New news from Ericsson. Looks like they are really pushing their softswitch just like Nortel is. I guess Huawei is really pushing the other telecom equipment manufacturers. Their prices are sooo much lower (not much overhead costs in China) it is really putting a strain on everyone else.

Ericsson brings HSDPA and IMS to Optimus in Portugal

Optimus, a mobile operator within the Portuguese Sonaecom group, has chosen Ericsson's IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) for the delivery of new multimedia and converged services. Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERICY) will also enhance the Optimus 3G network with its market-leading mobile softswitch and HSDPA solutions.

Optimus has taken an important step towards an all-IP network by enhancing its 2G/3G network with Ericsson's mobile softswitch and IMS solutions. Ericsson's IMS solution will enable Optimus to deliver a wide range of new multimedia services such as weShare, which allows users to share different media - including pictures and video clips -during a voice call. The solution will also reduce the costs of network ownership and shorten time-to-market when Optimus introduces new services.

New Verizon FiOS TV Programming News

Verizon has successfully reached an agreement with CBS for retransmission and video on demand of CBS content, with programs such as "CSI," "NCIS" and "Survivor."

However they seem to be having a bit of a problem in negotiations with Cablevision Systems Corp. on allowing Verizon access to sports programming they wish to carry on FiOS TV.

CBS and Verizon Reach Comprehensive Retransmission Consent Agreement.

Verizon FiOS TV Will Carry CBS-Owned Television Stations and Local Video-On-Demand Content Deal Also Includes CBS Television Network VOD Content.

NEW YORK – Verizon and CBS today announced a comprehensive retransmission consent and video-on-demand (VOD) agreement, which includes analog, digital, multicast and high-definition rights to programming on CBS owned-and-operated television stations; local VOD content from those stations; and CBS Television Network VOD content, including such current popular network series as "CSI," "NCIS" and "Survivor."

Verizon will offer the programming on Verizon FiOS TV, its new fiber-optic TV service, which is now available in parts of seven states. All FiOS TV subscribers with a set-top box will receive the CBS Television Network VOD content at no incremental cost, which will also be true for FiOS TV subscribers in CBS O&O markets with regard to the local VOD content.

Verizon Seeks FCC Intervention to Free Cablevision's Stranglehold on Sports Programming.

Cablevision's Anti-Competitive Behavior in New York and Massachusetts Runs Afoul of 1992 Cable Consumer Protection Act.

WASHINGTON - Stymied by extended stonewalling by Cablevision Systems Corp. and its wholly-owned subsidiary Rainbow Media Holdings, Verizon has filed a formal program access complaint with the Federal Communications Commission to secure Rainbow's sports programming for Verizon's FiOS TV customers in New York and New England.

Good to see Verizon is looking for more content especially for video on demand. The cable companies are now in for a rude awakining with systems such as FIOS TV making a greater market penetration and getting more and more content all the time. TV your way, isn't technology great?
