What Are Calling Cards
A calling card, also known as a phone card, is basically a credit card which is used to
connect with a long distance company using an access telephone number and a PIN (Personal
Identification Number). They are thus very handy for making long distance calls when you are
away from your home or office. Of course you can also use them at home and many times you can
make cheaper long distance calls with the canadian calling card than you can with your
normal long distance company.
When choosing calling cards there are several questions you should ask yourself.
Where am I going to use it from. What kind of billing do I want (pre-paid, post-paid,
credit card billed, etc.?). Is it for a single use or continuous use?, and others.
We will review these features below.
What to look for in Canadian calling cards
If you are traveling out of the country, you will want a phone card which will work
from the country/ countries to which you are traveling.
You will want to choose the payment option which is best for you.
With a pre-paid card you pay in advance, then use the card to make calls until you have used up
the amount of minutes you bought on the card. They are normally available in amounts of $5, $10,
$20, and $50.
With post-paid calling cards you pay at the end of the month either with your credit card or
you receive a bill then pay it at the bank (depends on the service provider).
Some things to watch for when buying a calling card are; 1) Connection Fees, some companies
charge a fee just for making the call then you also pay a per minute fee, 2) Billing Increment,
with most calling cards you pay a minimum amount for each call (typically 1 minute) then bill
at a certain increment of time. The best choice is usually a one minute minimum, then a 3 or 6
second billing increment. The lower the billing increment the better as all calling card
companies round up to the next full billing increment. Thus if you make a 2 minute and 1 second
call and the billing increment is 30 seconds you get billed for a 2 minute and 30 second call.
however if you are billed at 3 second increments you will only be billed for a 2 minute and
3 second call.
Below you will find a list of the calling cards we currently offer to residents of Canada. More will be added in the near future.
