Four billion mobile users by 2015
The number of mobile phone users worldwide will soar to four billion from the current 1.4 billion by 2015, according to the chief executive of Nokia.
Speaking at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, Jorma Ollila said that two billion people will have mobile phones by 2008, while half of the world's population will be signed up seven years later, Reuters reports.
"Mobile communication has the potential to give access to communications to half of the world's population by 2015. This will mean roughly four billion," he said.
He forecast most of the growth to come from emerging markets such as China, India, Brazil, Indonesia and Russia.
In developed countries wireless communications will surpass fixed-line communications in terms of the volume of voice call traffic, Mr Ollila added.
This is already the situation in Italy, Portugal and the Czech Republic where mobile phone penetration is high.

The news in telecom for today,
A bit of a slow day, but some interesting news all the same.
Michael Sabia, Bell Canada Enterprises President and CEO, made an extremely interesting speach on the changes taking place in the industry. He quotes research on how users are changing from their normal wireline service, and using cellular services, voip, and other technolgy more and more.
[quote] He said that even today, before the full impact of IP is felt, customers
are increasingly turning to substitutes for their traditional wireline
telephone service on which Bell continues to be heavily regulated. Mr. Sabia
pointed to research that showed:
- 10% of Canadians have cut back on the number of wireline connections
at home because of e-mail
- About half of cell phone customers use their cells at home, even when
they have a nearby wireline
- 55% of Internet users say they use local phone service less because of
the options the Internet gives them, and
- 230,000 Canadian homes and 8 million U.S. homes have already switched
totally to wireless.
